Fashion Photoshoot – Part 1

March 9th, 2010 by John under Modeling

“I love it when a plan comes together” – Hannibal | “The A-Team”

There’s really nothing better than being on a team full of talented people and being able to be a small piece of something great.  All too often photography is “one person” focused meaning that its just the photographer doing the work … but when you get other people involved outside yourself … magic happens.

Last Sunday I was privileged to be the photographer piece of the “A-Team” of artists that made for a super fun and successful fashion shoot.

The photoshoot was the brainchild of my good friend Natasha Ohlman who orchestrated the whole thing.  Not only did she have the original creative vision for the shoot, but she pulled together a fantastic group of professionals to collaborate with.  In addition she found and secured the locations (HopKat and Calvin College Library), gathered all the clothes (from Muse Boutique) and shoes (from Fifty Two 7) to round out all the details. And finally Natasha found all our models including Azizah Hines, Jacalyn Huizenga, and Ben and Aaron Stoner.

The hair styling was done by Erin Brown of Studio Q and the makeup was done by Julie Strating and both of them knocked it out of the park.  I really wish both of them could be with me on every shoot I do… wow!

Before I get to the pictures I had to share a few thoughts from the photography side of things.  First and foremost it was so much fun because I had Natasha right there to help direct the poses and locations…  it was a beautiful collaboration that really “upped” the production quality of the poses.  In addition having Natasha there to help with the models freed me up to really focus on lighting and composition – what a delight.

And speaking of lighting… I used various combination of  2 studio strobes and 1 flash to light throughout the day.  In many cases I had a very small area to work with (only a few feet) so finding ways of getting the light to go where I wanted it was definitely a challenge.  A few things I did a lot on this shoot was shooting into (reflecting off of) smaller umbrellas to help give more directional light and minimize light spilling everywhere.  In addition my flash (off camera of course) was set at a high mm setting (between 120-200mm all day) to help get more of a spot light effect.

OK, on to the pictures… I’ll speak a little more about the library shoot later in this post… but to kick things off here are a few favorites from HopKat.

So shooting in the library… I must admit that at first I was a little unimpressed with this 2nd location… its just a bunch of dark rows of books right?  Well when I first saw the rows of books it kind of was uninspiring, but thats because I didn’t know what outfits and looks (hair and makup) Natasha had in mind.  Once the models walked on set I was instantly on the same page with Natasha’s vision and saw how it all went together.  Truth is the Library set was my favorite, and here’s why…

Have you ever tried lighting someone halfway down a dark library isle and not have it look flat?  Well its not easy.  After doing some brainstorming we decided to take some risks and move countless rows of library books off shelves to shine through from the neighboring isles.  The result was a fantastic lighting show that added so much dimension and drama that I just fell in love.  I love how disguised the light is in some of these shots… like it comes out of no where (well now you know where its coming from, but if you hadn’t read the paragraph above you’d probably have to look twice to figure it out). :)

This is just a few shots from the day and I promise to post more soon… Hope you enjoyed seeing them as much as I enjoyed shooting and lighting them.  :)

Gamal & Jessica’s Wedding Trailer

February 25th, 2010 by John under Trailers, Videography, Weddings

I don’t know where to begin talking about this wedding… other than to say I loved it.  I love outdoor weddings, but by far my favorite weddings are on a beach like this one was.  Add to that my “Cinema Pack” with the added “jib” shots and you have the makings of one all the ingredients for a fun day of shooting.

Of course without Gamal (Jay) and Jessica’s fun loving spirit and deep love for each other all the equipment in the world wouldn’t have mattered in telling their wedding story.  They are truly some of the kindest and fun loving people I’ve met and are genuine throughout.  My crew (Jay Irwin and Tyler Jackson) and I all felt like we were part of their family and were celebrating with them the entire day, and it was so easy to tell their story for them and with them.  Jay is Turkish and there were fun little Turkish elements mixed in through out the day such as the “Turkish Evil Eye” on Jessica’s bracelet and the favors.

The wedding was beautifully coordinated by Rachel Cytacki from All Things Creative with every detail carefully planned out.  Looking back we hardly noticed Rachel (and her husband Dan) working as they seemed to have everything running so well… I rarely saw them in action.  You could tell the day was planned out perfectly in advance as they were never stressed and always had a smile when working.  The day went perfectly thanks to their careful blend of planning and execution which made our job so easy and that much more fun. :)

The wedding took place in Northern Michigan at a residence on Michigan’s beautiful Leelanau Peninsula and was officiated by Reverend Jack Baragar who did a fantastic job.  The weather was a little iffy in the morning and there were scattered rain showers all around the Traverse City area, but it all managed to stay south and east of us.  The result was a magical blend of clouds and sunlight that resulted in this beautiful soft light with pastel blues in the sky and in the water.  We couldn’t have asked for better lighting and weather.

I’ll be honest… I’m really excited about this this trailer (if you haven’t figured that out by now) and I am so proud to post it today.  The discovery of the music was recent and I knew it was a perfect match for this wedding.

So without any further delay, I give you Jay and Jessica’s Wedding trailer:

Emily and Mike’s Wedding Trailer

February 9th, 2010 by John under Trailers, Weddings

It’s always a fun day when I am able to put a trailer up on my blog and more importantly share a first glimpse of a wedding film with my clients.  Today I am happy to share a small piece of Emily and Mike’s wedding film with you.  The Day started out rainy but soon cleared (as if by magic) during the ceremony and turned out to be a gorgeous day!

This couple was fantastic to work with and so much fun.  Emily looked stunning in her Oscar de la Renta dress and and the flowers by Mulick Floral were both creative and beautiful.  The reception was a Cascade Country Club who also provided the stunning cake design.

Enjoy!

Kevin and Casey – Night time e-session.

December 30th, 2009 by John under Engagement, Photoshoots

I lOVE shooting at night.  While it has its challenges, the light and contrast in the images are so fun to work with.  I end up seeing more shapes, forms, lines and colors that don’t always stand out during the day time.

About a week ago, I had a chance to do an engagement session with one of my 2010 couples at night (their idea) in Kalamazoo and we had a blast.  The temperature was as good as you can ask for to still have snow falling and yet not be miserable in the freezing cold.  I was really hoping for snow actually as I knew it would make for some fun lighting effects and… as you’ll see God provided. :)

We spent most of the night in Downtown Kalamazoo, and then grabbed 2 quick shots at the Radison to close out the session.  Here are some of the highlights. : )

Kellie – Model Shoot & Workshop

December 18th, 2009 by John under Modeling

Yesterday one of my 2010 Brides (I’m doing her wedding video) stopped by and we began working on an exciting new idea for a future workshop.

The condensed version is that it would be a workshop for both models and photographers to attend with the goal of improving posing from both sides of the camera.  Models would come to learn to pose, and photographers would come to learn what poses work and how to assist the subject to move and pose.

Kellie has a lot of educational and training experience teaching modeling for Barbizon and has a well rounded portfolio of experience to to pull from.  On the photographer side, learning what things to look for as well as how to instruct people to move is an essential part of any portrait work be it weddings, seniors, fashion or others.  We think this workshop idea will be great for anyone who wants to learn how to better thier posing no matter what side of the camera you are on!  If you are interested in this workshop (either for modeling or as a photographer) shoot me an e-mail so we can keep you posted as we fine tune the details.

After our afternoon meeting, we quickly snapped a few photos for fun… so I thought I’d share some of my favorites. :)
