Stephanie and Jarrod’s Wedding

July 27th, 2009 by John under Weddings

Need a recipe for a fantastic wedding? All you need is 2 amazing people + 2 jars of sticky sand + 1 rowboat and a lot of laughter and you’ve got yourself a winner.  Stephanie and Jarod’s wedding Saturday was filled with all the above and more, and I had to pleasure of photographing it.  I was accompanied by my Friend Emily who did a fantastic job and we couldn’t have asked for a better day to shoot.  Here are some of the highlights…

At one point, a wasp flew into the room and the bride’s mother threw a washcloth on it and grabbed the washcloth to take it outside… or so was the plan.  When she heard it buzzing in her hands she freaked out and throw it on the ground and went ballistic on the insect.

later in the day… a little Mother – Daughter moment.

I just had to grab this image. :P

The sand ceremony didn’t quite go as smoothly as hoped… but made for a great moment in the day.  The sand was stuck and would not come out!

After several repeated poundings… the sand eventually came out.

After the ceremony they escaped into a row boat…

I did the entire reception with off camera flash and had to throw in some of my favorite dancing shots from the reception.

And to end the day we snuck away from the reception and grabbed a quick sunset shot.

Sneak Peak at Commercial for Reedy Boutique Photography

July 23rd, 2009 by John under Family, Photoshoots, Videography

Here are a few shots from my shoot yesterday for Lori at Reedy Boutique Photography.  The actual commercial will probably not have music, or if it does it will be different … possibly guitar.  The ending will also be different, but you’ll just have to wait to see that until its finished.  Also there will most likely be a ton of sound effects (wind, trees, baby noises etc…) in the final commercial.

For now though, enjoy this sneak peak!

Also note… I’m experimenting with using Facebook’s embed tag to post this video.  To see this at its peak quality go to my facebook page and view it there: www.facebook.com/johnpottenger/

Surprise Photoshoot

July 21st, 2009 by John under Family, Photoshoots

A few weekends ago I played a fun role in a surprise photoshoot for my friend and fellow photographer Tammi Stephens.  Her creative husband Matt planned the whole thing and managed to keep the details a secret amidst Tammi’s attempts to guess the surprise. ;)

The plan was to drive up to GR and have me snap some secret pictures of them together, and then surprise her with a family photoshoot (which they hadn’t done family pictures in over 4 years).  While I don’t normally do family shoots, I was eager to play my role and have fun with this great family in the process.  Here are some of the highlights.

Enjoying a drink together by the Grand River…

She never even saw me… because I used my Ninja hiding skillz!

Then their kids arrived – Surprise still progressing…

Lake Michigan Wedding – Teaser Video

July 20th, 2009 by John under Trailers, Videography, Weddings

If you’ve been following me on Twitter or Facebook, you’d know I just aquired a 35mm lens adapter (A Cinevate Brevis MP.2) which in essence lets me put my beautiful Nikon Lenses on the front of my HD Video camera to produce some incredible images.  After shooting an amazing wedding on Saturday along with In Any Event, Jen Kroll, Modern Day Floral and many other talented vendors… I just had to take a look at some of the video footage.

Having recently upgraded to a tapeless camera work flow, I was able to look through all the footage quickly… and after scanning some of the shots… I found myself cutting together a short teaser video of the event.  : )

While the details of the event were amazing (as always with Jodi and her incredible team), I focused this video on the ambiance of the beautiful lake shore location and the bride and groom’s interaction with it.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed shooting and editing it. :)

Exciting news at Coastline Studios

July 6th, 2009 by John under General, Videography, Weddings

A few blog posts ago I mentioned that my excuse for not blogging for so long was because I’ve been busy.

The first thing that has been filling my time recently was wrapping up the editing of a huge wedding video I filmed back in November.  For me this wedding broke many records including 5+ video cameras for the ceremony, over 19 hours total of video shot, my longest ever wedding film (54 minutes) and a new way to screen my wedding films.  But before I get too far ahead of myself… let me start at the beginning.

FINDING FOCUS: (PHOTOGRAPHY VS. VIDEOGRAPHY)

While I enjoy telling stories through both wedding photography and videography, I’ve recently decided to place my primary focus on the videography side of the business.  I will still offer photography as part of our services, but will be making videography the heart of Coastline Studios.  It has been something I’ve wrestled with since I first started doing weddings in 1997, and to have “found focus” on videography has been both difficult and exciting at the same time.  It is with this new focus, that I share with you some of the exciting new things happening at Coastline Studios…

COASTLINE IS HD!

There are multiple reasons we waited to make the transition, but the main reason was that I’ve never had a bride or prospective bride ask for it.  Many of the videographers today still deliver in “Standard Definition” so the necessity of authoring a BluRay “High Definition” DVD is in the minority and just starting to take off.  My final reason for waiting to go HD, was that I didn’t want to just “go HD”, but I also wanted to go “tapeless” and record right to a hard drive or solid state of some kind (SD cards etc…)  The camera that I’ve been waiting for to do that (that met my specific needs at least) finally hit the market late last year.  Needless to say I am super excited to be shooting higher resolution video and can’t wait to start improving the images I create with this new “paintbrush” that is HD video.

And what a better time than now to share my first few HD shots with you!  Here is a quick 45 second preview of some shots my crew and I took at a recent wedding In Connecticut!  I thought I’d go a different route and tell a small story involving the kids rather than the typical shots shown in wedding trailers.  I hope you like it!

NEW ASSOCIATE WEDDING VIDEO PACKAGES:

If you’ve seen this video, you know my passion for wedding videography… and more importantly, my desire that every engaged couple have a quality wedding video.  Unfortunately, not every wedding budget can afford a wedding videographer, especially a good one… which always bothered me.  I felt that I wasn’t living up to my personal conviction to provide a solid wedding video for anyone who wants one because not everyone could afford it (after all I couldn’t when I got married).  Well, I’m proud to say that has changed.  I now offer “Associate” video packages starting at $650!  These packages are completely separate from my primary video packages which are now called my “Cinematic” packages.  I could spend another 2 or 3 paragraphs explaining all the differences between my “Associate” and “Cinematic” Packages, but I’ll save that for those of you who contact me with specific questions. ; )

NEW THEATER SCREENING PACKAGES:

Something I am SOOO excited about is the launching of a new method to screen my films… in a full blown movie theater!  I am now proud to announce that I have recently revamped my “Cinematic” packages to include a theater screening for the top two packages.  This experience is nothing short of amazing- you get to re-live your wedding day on the big screen, AND invite your friends and family to re-unite once more. You’ll experience your “film debut” in style… complete with complimentary popcorn and sodas all around!

NEW STUDIO:

This announcement is hot off the presses, and you may have even heard about it from Jen Kroll already, but Jen and I have decided to have our own separate studios.  We are both very excited about this direction and I can’t tell you how I excited I am for Jen as she continues to grow her business and take it to new found heights.  The details of my new studio are still being finalized, so be sure to check back for updates and pictures over the next few months as things begin to take shape. : )

NEW BLOG:

This one is still in progress, but has been in the works for a while.  Stay tuned as I hope to launch a whole new look and feel to my blog with the help of the ever talented Ked Rhodes.

So that about wraps things up here at Coastline Studios.  We have a full wedding season for 2009 and are excited to experience and tell so many of our client’s stories this year.  Thank you everyone who has helped me along the way and those who continue to do so.  Your support, encouragement and dedication to help us improve are invaluable and we are truly grateful!  To God be the Glory!
